Five Arrested in Kisoro for Strangling Retired Teacher to Death

The territorial police in Kisoro have made significant strides in their investigation, arresting five suspects in connection with the murder of a retired primary teacher. The tragic incident occurred in Kamonyi Cell, Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality.

The suspects, identified as Peter Ndagijimana (20), a resident of Karumina Cell Central Division, Kisoro Municipality; Isaac Nkurikiyimana (27), a butcher; Angela Utuze (22), a Rwandan bar attendant residing in Kekubo, Karenina Ward, Northern Division; Angela Muhawemana (20), a Rwandan bar attendant from Gishera, Nyagashinge Ward, Northern Division; and William Nzamoye (28), a boda boda rider, were taken into custody following the investigation.

According to a police statement, Joy Nyiramuhisha, 62, a retired primary teacher residing in Kamonyi Cell, Kamonyi Ward, Northern Division, was murdered by unknown assailants on the night of June 26, 2024. The motive behind the heinous crime was to steal 16 million Ugandan shillings, which the victim had raised through a land sale. Her body was discovered locked in one of the rooms in the boys’ quarters.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesman, informed journalists on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, that the suspects have confessed to the crime. Maate also mentioned that several of the deceased’s belongings, including a TV, remote, and decoder, were recovered from the suspects’ possession.

“While inquiries are still ongoing, the suspects will be arraigned before the courts of law to face charges accordingly,” Maate stated, emphasizing the commitment of the police to bring justice to the bereaved family.
