The territorial police in Kabale are intensively searching for a suspect implicated in the tragic death of an 11-month-old girl. The incident has sparked outrage and a strong call for justice within the local community.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi Region police, Bernard Nyetunge is alleged to have killed Evas Kyakunzire, an infant residing in Kamukungu cell, Kisasa parish, Kamuganguzi sub-county, Kabale district. The tragic event unfolded following a domestic violence incident that escalated late in the night.
Nyetunge, who is known to the authorities for his history of domestic violence, has reportedly had numerous altercations with his family, often fueled by alcohol abuse. Local leaders have previously intervened, providing counseling and attempting to mediate peace within the household. Despite these efforts, the situation escalated fatally on the night of June 15, 2024.
At approximately 2:00 am, an intoxicated Nyetunge returned home and began assaulting his family members. In a desperate attempt to escape the violence, the family fled their home. Atuheire Bridget, the deceased’s sister, was carrying Evas Kyakunzire on her back as they tried to seek safety. However, Nyetunge pursued them and struck the baby with a stick, resulting in a grievous head injury.
The infant was immediately rushed to a nearby health center but succumbed to her injuries.
Upon being notified of the incident, the police at Katuna station responded promptly. The Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations Division (O/C CID) in Kabale registered the case, and law enforcement officials quickly visited and documented the crime scene. Despite their swift response, Nyetunge managed to evade capture and is currently at large.
The Kabale community has been left in shock and mourning following the tragic event. Many residents are calling for heightened measures to address domestic violence and ensure that justice is served for young Evas Kyakunzire.
The police have intensified their efforts to locate Nyetunge, urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward. The case has been registered under the reference number CRB 472/2024 at Kabale police station.
ASP Maate assured the public that the police are committed to apprehending the suspect and ensuring that he faces the full extent of the law. “This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the victim. We are doing everything in our power to bring the perpetrator to justice,” Maate stated.
The tragic death of Evas Kyakunzire highlights the critical need for more effective interventions in cases of domestic violence and the importance of community vigilance in preventing such tragedies.
