Locals from Kaharo sub-county, Kabale District, have voiced their dismay over the increasing levels of criminal activity, attributing it to alleged police negligence in handling suspects. During a piggery distribution event held on Friday, July 5, 2024, in Nyakasharara and Burambira parishes, residents gathered to express their concerns.
John Kabagambe, chairperson of Omukisamba Village in Burambira Parish, highlighted that rampant thefts of livestock and agricultural produce have plagued the community. The donated pigs, intended to bolster local farming efforts, have unfortunately become prime targets for thieves, exacerbating the challenges faced by farmers.
“The situation is dire,” Kabagambe lamented, pointing out that unemployed youth, opting for illicit activities over gainful employment, are primarily responsible for the crimes. He emphasized the impact of these thefts on community development initiatives, underscoring the need for immediate intervention.
Echoing these sentiments, Kaharo sub-county LC3 Chairperson Edmandi Tumwesigye expressed grave concern about the setbacks to the Parish Development Model (PDM) caused by the surge in criminality. Tumwesigye revealed instances where beneficiaries of local development programs, including those who had purchased cattle, fell victim to thefts, jeopardizing their livelihoods.
“The recent release of suspects shortly after their arrest has left us vulnerable,” Tumwesigye added, citing a recent incident where assault suspects were allegedly freed, prompting residents to resort to safeguarding their livestock within their homes, fearing for their safety.
In response to these challenges, Kabale District Woman MP pledged to collaborate with local authorities to establish stringent bylaws aimed at curbing criminal activities. She assured the community of her commitment to address the issue through engagement with relevant stakeholders.
As residents grapple with the repercussions of increased criminality, local leaders continue to advocate for swift action to safeguard community welfare and foster sustainable development.
