Police in Kanungu District are hunting for a 28-year-old man who allegedly killed his biological father after being accused of stealing and selling his father’s coffee.
The suspect, identified as Amosi Nuwagaba, is accused of killing his 73-year-old father, Emmanuel Bareba. Both were residents of Kyeshero Central Cell, Kyeshero Parish, Kyeshero Sub County, in Kanungu District.
According to a police statement, on July 4, 2024, at about 2:00 PM at their home, Emmanuel accused his son Amosi of stealing coffee from the house and selling it. This accusation enraged Amosi, who then attacked his father, boxing and kicking him in the stomach and ribs before using a stick to continue the assault.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, told journalists on Thursday, July 11, 2024, that Emmanuel, with bruises on his face, back, and stomach, reported the assault to the area chairman, Andrew Munyantware.
He said that Emmanuel was then taken and admitted to Bwindi Community Hospital for treatment, where he died on July 8, 2024, at about 2:00 PM.
Maate revealed that the suspect allegedly escaped to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) upon learning of his father’s death. It was also noted that Amosi was a habitual drug abuser who had frequently assaulted his father.
The Kyeshero Police Post was informed about the incident. The crime scene was visited and documented, statements were recorded, and a postmortem was conducted. Inquiries are still ongoing to apprehend the suspect.
