Police Hunt for Suspects in Murder of 32-Year-Old Casual Laborer in Rukungiri

The territorial police in Rukungiri are searching for unknown suspects who killed a casual laborer in Ruhinda sub-county, Rukungiri district.

The deceased, identified as Andrew Twijukye, 32, was a resident of Kakoma cell, Burombe parish, Ruhinda sub-county, Rukungiri district.

According to a police statement, it is alleged that on May 24, 2024, Twijukye and Akampulira Godwin, alias God, were guarding road construction materials at Kakoma trading center. On May 25, 2024, at around 8:00 pm, they were each paid twenty thousand shillings (20,000 UGX).

Both men went to a bar within the Kakoma trading center, where they drank until 5:00 pm, when Akampulira Godwin left, leaving Twijukye still drinking.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, told the press that the deceased did not return home. On May 31, 2024, at around 8:00 am, Komwaro Rosette, Twijukye’s mother, informed Nyangira David, Twijukye’s paternal uncle, who reported the disappearance to the Ruhinda police station. He was advised to put out radio announcements and continue searching for Twijukye.

Maate revealed that on May 31, 2024, at around 5:00 pm, while Nyangira David was searching, he discovered Twijukye’s body in the bushy farm of Rwamagaya Catholic Church and notified the police.

The crime scene was visited and documented, and the body was taken to the Rwakabengo HC3 mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Maate requested that any person with information that could lead the police to the perpetrators volunteer that information so that those involved can be apprehended and charged accordingly. Investigations are ongoing.
