Rwandan Nationals Arrested for the Alleged Murder of an 83-year-old man in Kabale District

Police in Kabale District have arrested two Rwandan nationals in connection with the murder of Geoffrey Twinomujuni Ntegyire, an 83-year-old resident of Karujabura Cell in Mwendo Parish of Kitumba Sub County. The suspects, identified as Kwizera Desire and his wife Uwingabire, were apprehended on June 1, 2024, at the Kyanika – Uganda border with Rwanda in Kisoro district while attempting to flee the country.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi region Police, the incident occurred on the evening of May 31, 2024. The suspects, who had been living with Ntegyire as helpers, allegedly killed him using a hammer around 8 PM. Following the murder, they packed some of his belongings, including a mattress, an iron box, a radio, a suitcase, and a bicycle, and made their escape.

Their flight was cut short at the Kyanika border where security personnel intercepted them. The suspects lacked proper documentation and were detained. Subsequent investigations revealed their involvement in the murder. Maate stated that the suspects confessed to the crime, citing their frustration with the deceased, who often quarreled with them in a language they struggled to understand.

“The suspects were arrested with the deceased’s property and confessed to the crime during interrogation, They say that they were annoyed by the deceased’s constant quarreling, which they couldn’t properly understand due to the language barrier.” Maate reported.

Maate further says that the suspects were transported back to Kabale and are currently in custody adding that they are expected to be charged with murder and theft following the completion of the investigation.

“This case serves as a reminder of the tragic consequences of unresolved domestic disputes and the importance of clear communication,” Maate added. “We will ensure that justice is served for the late Ntegyire and his family.”
