Bishop Kivengere Girls’ School in Muyebe, Kabale District, of South western uganda commemorated its remarkable journey of fifty years in education with a jubilant celebration of achievements and a renewed commitment to its founding principles. Founded in 1974 with a mere 40 students in Senior One, the school has blossomed into an institution of over 400 students offering courses up to “A” Level in all government curriculum subjects, alongside practical courses, under the guidance of a dedicated and qualified teaching staff
The school was named in honor of the Late Rt Rev Festo Kivengere, who was the Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi at the time.
The Golden Jubilee festivities were not merely about commemorating the past but also about reflecting on the pressing issues of the present and envisioning a brighter future. The event saw Rt Rev Gaddie Akanjuna, the Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, delivering a powerful sermon highlighting the critical need for enhanced parenting standards. He passionately addressed concerns about rising immorality among children, attributing it to inadequate parental guidance and the prevalence of domestic violence and neglect.
The Bishop Kivengere’s daughter, Mrs. Peace Kivengere Rwanga, reflecting on the school’s founding ethos, recounted the inspirational journey of her mother’s advocacy for girls’ education in the region. Her narrative echoed the resilience and determination of the community to overcome educational barriers and empower young girls with the tools for success.
In sync with the spirit of growth and progress, Head Teacher Byomuhangi Eunice underscored the necessity for infrastructural development to accommodate the expanding student population adequately. Her appeal for government support to bolster the school’s facilities, including classrooms and a computer laboratory, resonated with the audience as a crucial step towards ensuring quality education for all.
The event also witnessed Honorable Catherine Ndamira Atwakiire, the Kabale District Woman MP, championing the cause of education equity. She emphasized the importance of providing equal educational opportunities for both genders, advocating for a shift towards a more inclusive approach that addresses the needs of boys alongside girls. Her call for fostering responsible citizenship through equitable education struck a chord with the attendees, reinforcing the school’s mission of empowerment and inclusivity.
The presence of esteemed guests, including the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, represented by Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to education and gender equality. Their endorsement of the school’s vision and efforts to combat gender-based violence served as a testament to the collective resolve to nurture a more equitable and harmonious society.
As Bishop Kivengere Girls Muyebe celebrates its Golden Jubilee, it stands as a beacon of hope and progress, embodying the transformative power of education in shaping lives and communities. Looking ahead, the school remains steadfast in its mission to empower students to realize their full potential in learning, leadership, and service to God and the community.
