Researchers Highlight Challenges Facing Research in Uganda, Call for Increased Investment in Research and Innovation

The Research Director at Kabale University, Dr. Julius Arinaitwe, has expressed that the lack of access to research mentorship, equipment, and limited time allocated for research has significantly affected the effective progress of research levels in Uganda.

He made this statement during a one-day multidisciplinary research dissemination workshop held at Kabale University’s Science Teaching Facility main hall. Research intellectuals gathered to discuss the challenges facing research in Uganda. The workshop, themed “Enhancing Research Utilization through Multidisciplinary Research Dissemination,” aimed to address the issues hindering research progress in the country. Dr. Arinaitwe highlighted that the lack of mentors and immediate supervisors has hindered researchers’ success. He added that it’s not easy to access equipment to use during research, hence making it difficult to perform the necessary tasks in research.

He further emphasized that these factors are crucial for researchers to produce high-quality work and contribute meaningfully to their respective fields.

Associate Professor Dr. David Mukunya, specializing in maternal and child health epidemiology at Busitema University, further emphasized the importance of government investment in research and innovation. He argued that research should be prioritized and funded similarly to other sectors such as tourism and minerals. Dr. Mukunya believes that research is akin to “seed money” and is essential for Uganda to compete internationally.
