Evelyn Ninsiima Kikafunda, President of The Green Environment Promotion (GEP), today spearheaded a major community clean-up initiative in Kashaki, Bubaare Town Council, Rubanda District. Collaborating with the Kashaki Forward Women Group, the event focused on removing polythene waste from the community, promoting environmental health and sustainability.
The clean-up saw enthusiastic participation from community members inspired by Kikafunda’s dedication to environmental conservation. The effort addressed the critical issue of polythene/plastic pollution, which threatens soil health, water quality, and local biodiversity.
Kikafunda highlighted the importance of grassroots efforts in fostering a cleaner environment. “Our actions today are a step towards safeguarding our natural resources for future generations. By working together, we can significantly reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable practices,” she stated.
She also called upon the government to consider establishing biodegradable materials and regulating or banning the manufacturing of plastic and polythene. Kikafunda emphasized that biodegradable alternatives should be environmentally friendly and not harm the soil.
Additionally, she urged the government to collaborate with environmental experts to identify gaps in the fight against polythene pollution and involve local communities in addressing the issue. This collaboration, she believes, is crucial for effective and sustainable solutions.
Jimmy Musiime, coordinator of Kabale Agro Forestry Networks, highlighted the challenges in combating plastic pollution. He emphasized the need for self-discipline in reducing polythene use, recycling efforts, and engaging with environmental experts.
Beatrice Nyabirano, PRO of the Kashaki Forward Women Group, noted that educational sessions were conducted during the clean-up to raise awareness about the harmful effects of polythene on the environment and the importance of proper waste management. Participants were encouraged to adopt eco-friendly habits, such as using reusable bags and participating in regular community clean-ups.
During the event, Kikafunda, who is also eyeing the woman Member of Parliament seat for Rubanda District, initiated a revolving Goat Rearing project among the group’s 50+ members to promote sustainability and generate income.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in GEP’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental health across Uganda. The organization plans to replicate similar initiatives in other districts, aiming to build a nationwide movement for a cleaner, greener future.
