The Kabale District Health Department has reported that approximately 40 pregnant women succumb to pre-eclampsia annually. This pregnancy disorder, characterized by hypertension, is a significant concern according to District Health Officer, Dr. Gilbert Arinetwe Mateeka. Pre-eclampsia is recognized as the second leading cause of maternal deaths globally and the leading cause in Uganda.
Dr. Mateeka highlighted these alarming statistics during a press briefing at his office in Kabale Municipality, in anticipation of the district’s Pre-eclampsia Awareness Week scheduled for Saturday. He noted that out of the four maternal deaths recorded in Kabale District this year, one was due to pre-eclampsia.
Dr. Mateeka explained that certain groups are at higher risk for pre-eclampsia, including first-time mothers, mothers with multiple pregnancies, those with a history of the condition, and those with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes.

The awareness campaign will include educational programs and community outreach activities to inform expectant mothers and the general public about the signs, risks, and management of pre-eclampsia. The initiative seeks to ensure that more women receive early diagnosis and appropriate care to prevent the severe complications associated with the condition.
