A state-of-the-art multi-million washroom facility was officially inaugurated at Rwengyenyi Church of Uganda, Rusikizi Parish, in Nyabirerema Archdeaconry of the Diocese of Kigezi located in Kahondo, Kabale District. This landmark project, spearheaded by the Rwanika Family in collaboration with Richard LaRoche, marks a significant milestone in promoting sanitation and community development.
The initiative was championed by Mrs. Jacqueline Rwanika LaRoche, an ICOB Apex Board Member from the Community of BanyaKigezi Boston. It underscores ICOB Apex’s dedication to fostering the growth and well-being of local communities and institutions.
The modern facility includes two improved pit latrines, sit-flush toilets, and bathrooms for both male and female users, addressing long-standing sanitation challenges at the church.
The inaugural event featured a church service led by Rev. Apollo Twikirize, the Parish Priest of Rusikizi COU. The occasion was graced by dignitaries, including Canon Grace Tindikawa from the Diocese of Kigezi and Hon. Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda, Rubanda District Woman MP hopeful as well as ICOB Apex Board Member.
Mrs. Jacqueline Rwanika LaRoche shared her inspiration for the project, revealing that during a Christmas service at the church two years ago, she noticed the dire state of the washrooms. Recognizing the health and safety risks posed by the non-functional latrines, she decided to take action to ensure a healthier and more sustainable solution for the church and its surrounding community.
“These washrooms were designed not only for the present but also for future generations, promoting a healthy environment for all,” Jacqueline emphasized.
Yohana Byarugaba, the church’s lay reader, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Rwanika Family, acknowledging their consistent support for the church. He highlighted their earlier contributions, including initiating a banana plantation project on the church’s land.
While addressing the Christians, Canon Grace Tindikawa urged the Rwanika Family, the Tindikawa’s Family, and Hon. Evelyne Kikafunda to collaborate further in establishing a rainwater harvesting system to serve the washrooms and church. She also proposed constructing a ramp to improve access to the church for elderly members, emphasizing the need for inclusivity.
Hon. Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda applauded Mrs. Rwanika LaRoche’s commitment, noting its alignment with ICOB Apex’s mission of delivering impactful community projects. She pledged her support for the proposed ramp and rainwater system, reinforcing the importance of uniting for community development.
Mrs. Jacqueline Rwanika LaRoche reiterated her dedication to such initiatives, reflecting on her journey with ICOB Apex since 2023.
“ICOB Apex champions impactful projects that drive development. I’m fully committed to supporting the construction of the ramp to ensure accessibility for all, especially our elders,” she said.
The Christian community warmly embraced the washroom project, celebrating it as a transformative addition to their church.
