Stakeholders Advocate for Education and Patriotism Amidst HIV Concerns

The principal officer in charge of higher institutions at the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, Uganda, Okeke Michael, has advised young people to abstain from premarital sex, stating that it exposes them to HIV but instead to fucus in academics in order to excel.  

He made this call today, while speaking as the guest of honour during the patriotism pass-out ceremony of 1335 students and 56 teachers from Kigezi High School Senior, who have completed a one-week patriotism development course training at the Lower Playground in Northerner Division, Kabale Municipality.

Okeke noted that statistics show 600 youths are infected with HIV every seven days, stating that they can only avoid becoming part of this number by loving themselves and valuing their own lives.

He also urged students to interact and build social capital, emphasizing that it is better for them to focus on education and excel academically.

He has also urged the youth to resist Western cultures and instead cherish African culture, stating that Western culture has introduced negative influences, leading to an increase in harmful behaviours among young people.

Ronald Bakaki, the Deputy RDC of Kabale District, has urged all headteachers in Kabale District to commence patriotism training in their respective schools immediately. He warned that any headteacher who avoids this training will face disciplinary action in accordance with the constitution.

Additionally, he announced that over the next two weeks, a campaign will be launched to identify children living with HIV/AIDS. He explained that this initiative is part of President Museveni’s vision to eliminate new HIV infections by 2030.

Speaking during the same function, the headteacher of Kigezi High School, Akampurira Abraham, stated that the school has been focusing on human capital development to ensure that both staff and students are aligned with the vision of elevating the school’s stature.

He also mentioned that during the seven-day training, participants were educated on various topics and acquired several skills that will assist in achieving most of the school’s objectives.

The Patriotism Corps is a department in the Office of the President, initiated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in 2019. Its aim is to instill values and norms in students and youth.
