Traders at Karukara Market in Hamurwa Sub-County are raising alarms over the deteriorating hygiene and sanitation conditions surrounding their marketplace. The weekly market, which operates every Tuesday and attracts over 500 traders from Rubanda, Kabale, Kisoro, and Ntungamo, is facing severe sanitation challenges that are affecting both traders and customers.
During a visit to the market this morning, our reporter observed a bustling atmosphere with traders and buyers actively engaging in business despite the underlying issues.
Levi Owoyesigyere, chairman of the Karukara Market traders, highlighted that the market’s hygiene is substandard. He explained that the two available toilets are insufficient for the large number of people, and the water system for these toilets has been non-functional since the tanks broke down. This forces traders to carry water in small jerrycans, a practice that is both cumbersome and inadequate.
“Our hygiene in Karukara Market is not the best. We had toilets with water tanks, but the tanks got old and were never replaced. Sometimes a strong stench from the toilets makes it unbearable for us and deters customers from shopping,” said Owoyesigyere. He emphasized the critical need for improved sanitation and called on responsible authorities to take immediate action.
Other traders echoed these concerns, expressing frustration over high taxes that do not translate into adequate services. They reported that despite numerous complaints about the market’s poor hygiene, no improvements have been made. Additionally, traders highlighted rising insecurity, with incidents of theft and damage to their property becoming increasingly common.
“The issue of insecurity is rampant. Customers must be cautious because of thieves who snatch their bags. Despite paying substantial taxes, we receive minimal services. Our market lacks permanent security, and we often find our tents broken into. We are in a dire situation,” lamented one trader.
Attempts to get a comment from Justus Ampeire Hamurwa, the town clerk of Hamurwa Town Council, were unsuccessful. When contacted by phone, he claimed to be too busy to respond and suggested that the Rubanda communications officer should comment on the issues raised.
The traders’ grievances underscore the urgent need for improved sanitation facilities and enhanced security measures at Karukara Market to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for both traders and customers.
