Over 45,000 Citizens Targeted in Ongoing National ID Registration in Greater Kabale

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has reported significant progress in the ongoing mass registration of citizens for National Identity Cards in the Greater Kabale region. The exercise, which covers the districts of Kabale, Rukiga, and Rubanda, commenced on September 27, 2024, and is targeting Ugandans aged 17 and above, beginning with school-going individuals.

Billy Basulwa, the District Registration Officer for NIRA in the Greater Kabale region, highlighted that their goal is to register over 45,000 people across the three districts. He noted that the registration process has been running smoothly so far, with a promising turnout of eligible participants.

“We are pleased with the progress so far, and our teams are working tirelessly to ensure that we reach every eligible person,” Basulwa stated.

Basulwa further emphasized the importance of community participation, explaining that efforts are being made to extend registration services to local communities where eligible individuals reside. He encouraged the public to make the most of this opportunity when NIRA teams arrive in their areas.

Participants at Nyabikoni Secondary School in Kabale Municipality were among those registered and expressed their appreciation for the convenience of having the registration services brought closer to them. Many believe that acquiring a National ID will open up opportunities for their future.

Godwin Ainebyoona, one of the students, shared his optimism:
“Having a National ID will be important for my future plans, including applying for jobs and accessing services.”

Similarly, Gabriella Ashaba and Agricolla Ngabirano, students at the same school, echoed sentiments of gratitude, noting that the process was smooth and fast.

The ongoing nationwide registration initiative by NIRA aims to provide National Identification Numbers (NINs) to an estimated 17.2 million unregistered Ugandans, including newborns and adults.
