Police in Kabale District are searching for a 19-year-old man accused of murdering his biological father in Kituma Sub County.
The suspect, identified as Nicholas Niwagaba, allegedly killed his father, Darius Turamyomwe, a 52-year-old resident of Omumihanga Village, Kituma Sub County, Kabale District.
According to a police statement, on the evening of December 18, 2024, at approximately 8:00 pm, the deceased was attacked and assaulted by his son, who is the second-born of three children. The altercation reportedly began over a dispute concerning land. The deceased informed his son that the land he possessed was rightfully his, and since the son had come of age, he should leave the family home and start his own life.
The wife of the deceased, Kyarimpa Peragia, who had been at the local trading center, returned home to find her husband lying in their sitting room with blood coming from his mouth and his head swollen. He informed her that he had been beaten by his son, Nicholas Niwagaba.
Kyarimpa called a neighbour, Christopher, who helped transport Darius to Kabale Referral Hospital. Although he was admitted, Darius passed away on December 20, 2024, at approximately 3:00 pm, after being returned home on the same day.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He said that police were alerted by the area chairperson, Patrick Tumuranze. The scene was visited, processed, and documented, and statements were obtained from relatives. The body was returned to Kabale Referral Hospital for a postmortem. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect.
Maate condemned the incident, emphasizing that it is tragic for a person to kill their own parent over a dispute that could have been resolved peacefully.
He urged the public to report any information about Niwagaba’s whereabouts to the police so he can be brought to justice.
