8 Congolese Refugees Die in Fatal Accident in Rubanda

Eight Congolese refugees including 3 female juveniles, 3 female adults, and 2 male adults, have been confirmed dead on the spot following a tragic accident that occurred at Kamuserwa Cell, Nyakibaale Ward, Rubanda Town Council. The accident happened at around 11:30 PM on Friday, 29th, leaving several others injured and in critical condition.

The victims were traveling in a Hiace vehicle (drone), registration number UBK 037G, from Kisoro District heading to the Rwamiwaja refugee camp in Kamwenge District. Over 30 passengers are believed to have been on board. The vehicle reportedly went off the road and overturned, resulting in the fatalities.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to rescue the injured, who were rushed to various medical facilities, including Muko Health Center, Hamurwa Health Center, and Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, for further treatment. A total of 29 individuals were admitted, with some remaining in critical condition.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the vehicle may have failed to brake, making it impossible to negotiate a sharp corner. The vehicle fell approximately 100 meters off the road while traveling on a steep and winding stretch, which could have contributed to the tragedy, according to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Sub-Region Police Spokesperson.

Bodies of the deceased are at Kabale Regional Referal Hospital Motuary.
