Bishop Akanjuna Advocates for Early Engagement of Primary Students in Secondary Schools

In an effort to boost enrolment and attract talented students, the Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, has encouraged secondary school headmasters to invite Primary Seven candidates from their catchment areas to A-level and O-level dedication ceremonies.

Bishop Akanjuna made this statement during the opening of a two-day conference for Heads of Church of Uganda Education Institutions, held at St. Peter’s Cathedral church grounds, Rugarama Hill, Kabale Municipality.

The Bishop emphasized that inviting Primary Seven candidates to these dedication ceremonies is an excellent way to encourage them to join the same secondary school after completing their primary education. He believes that this initiative will increase the number of students enrolling in the same secondary school.

“Some secondary schools have small enrollments despite being surrounded by primary schools,” noted Bishop Akanjuna. “Inviting primary school students to dedication ceremonies fosters a sense of belonging and reminds them of the excellent education and opportunities available at the secondary school.”

He also mentioned that these interactions between current and prospective students would help build relationships and facilitate a smoother transition.

Kakama Godwin, the Commissioner of Finance and Planning from the Ministry of Finance, called upon heads of institutions to avoid taking loans for school fees, stressing the importance of managing financial resources responsibly.

He advised parents to choose schools they can afford, rather than placing their children in institutions with fees they cannot manage.
