The final match, a thrilling encounter between Butanda Parish and Kabere Parish, was decided by a nail-biting penalty shootout after both teams created numerous scoring opportunities during regulation time. Butanda Parish triumphed 4-2 in penalties, claiming the coveted Kadawa Cup 2024 and earning the title of champions.
Gilbert Niwaganyira Kadawa, the LC5 councilor for Butanda Sub-County and the tournament organizer, expressed his excitement about the event’s success. He noted that this was the first tournament held since Butanda gained sub-county status in 2002. Kadawa emphasized that the tournament’s primary goal was to unite the youth and formulate a cohesive sub-county team, which has been named Butanda United.
“This tournament is a milestone for Butanda Sub-County. It’s not just about competition; it’s about bringing the youth together and building a team that will represent our sub-county,” Kadawa said. He also announced plans to make the tournament an annual event.
Eliab Naturinda Mporera, the chief guest, commended the organizers for using sports to foster unity and fight crime among the youth.
“Sports play a vital role in bringing people together and keeping our youth away from crime. However, we must invest in better sports infrastructure. Leaders should advocate for support from the Ministry of Education and Sports to improve local facilities,” Mporera remarked.
The tournament concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the winning teams and individual players for their outstanding performances.
The Kadawa Cup 2024 has set a precedent for future tournaments, strengthening community bonds and promoting local sports development in Butanda Sub-County.
