Five Candidates Withdraw from Kisoro Woman MP NRM Primary By-elections, Eight Remain in the Race

Five candidates have pulled out of the Kisoro District Woman MP by-elections, leaving eight contenders still in the race. This was confirmed in a letter released today by Dr. Tanga Odoi, the Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission.

According to Dr. Odoi, the decision followed guidance from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Chairperson and President of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who called for a consensus-building meeting. The meeting, held today at the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters, aimed to streamline the competition for the Kisoro Woman MP seat.

The candidates who have withdrawn from the race include Sylvia Dushime, Eva Twireze, Niyikiza Louise, Allen Nkurikiye, and Aphia Nyiramahoro.

Those still in contention are Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, Igiraneze Winfred Faith, Jemimah Irankunda, Rose Kabagyeni, Blessed Kitentera, Irene Mahirwe, Hellen Mbonye, and Nirere Fancy Brenda.

The Kisoro Woman MP seat became vacant following the passing of Hon. Sarah Mateke, who previously served both as the district’s Woman MP and as the State Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs.

Joint campaigns for the by-elections, which had been put on hold last Friday, are expected to resume this week on Wednesday, October 16.
