Former Kabale Municipality MP Hon. Andrew Baryayanga Launches AJA Cup Tournament 2024/25

Kabale Municipality has witnessed the much-anticipated return of the AJA Cup Football Tournament, officially launched today by former Member of Parliament Hon. Andrew Baryayanga, famously known as AJA. The tournament will bring together 12 teams from the 12 parishes of Kabale Municipality, fostering community unity and talent development.

The launch ceremony featured the distribution of jerseys, soccer balls, and other equipment to participating teams. Hon. Baryayanga officiated the opening match at Kabale Main Stadium, where Upper Bugongi FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Kijuguta FC.

In his remarks, Baryayanga revealed that the AJA Cup is not a new initiative. He previously organized it annually during his tenure as MP, and this year’s revival marks an expanded and improved version. Unlike earlier editions, which were limited to three divisions, the 2024/25 tournament includes all parishes in the municipality and, for the first time, incorporates a women’s soccer category.

Expressing concern over the lack of modern sports facilities, Baryayanga recalled his efforts as MP to advocate for regional satellite stadiums, with Kabale earmarked as a beneficiary. He urged residents to support his return to Parliament, promising to resume efforts to develop infrastructure and nurture local talent.

Kabale District Football Association Chairperson, Frank Mutaremwa, praised the tournament’s role in keeping youth engaged during the holiday season, steering them away from harmful behaviors such as substance abuse. He highlighted its potential to help young players turn soccer into a professional career while improving their health.

Upper Bugongi FC captain, Boaz Arinaitwe, described the tournament as a timely intervention to uplift local talent. Reflecting on his team’s victory, he expressed optimism about future matches and the opportunity to showcase skills. James Bugabo, captain of Kijuguta FC, emphasized the need for his team to regroup after their narrow loss, acknowledging the tournament’s broader impact on youth mobilization and discipline.

During his parliamentary tenure, the AJA Cup was regarded as the local “Champions League” of Kabale Municipality. With its revival, Hon. Baryayanga aims to restore its former prestige, uniting the community while nurturing sportsmanship and professional growth.

The tournament will run through January 26, 2025, promising a season filled with thrilling matches and a renewed sense of unity among the 12 parishes of Kabale Municipality.
