GEP President Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda Restores Hope for 50-Year-Old Blind Man with Lifesaving Surgery

Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda, President of the Green Environment Promotion (GEP), has rekindled hope in the life of 50-year-old Jack Tumukwasibwe, a blind man from Kifurugutu Village, Kyigyeyo Ward, Rubanda Town Council, Rubanda District. Jack Tumukwasibwe, who has battled with a hernia since birth, had all but given up on receiving the surgery he desperately needed until he crossed paths with Kikafunda.

Tumukwasibwe, a teacher at Kisoro Demonstration Primary School, was born blind and developed a hernia at a young age. After seeking treatment at St. Francis Hospital Mutolere in Kisoro District, he was told that surgery would cost 1.5 million shillings—an amount far beyond his means. Faced with this overwhelming financial burden, Tumukwasibwe lost hope of ever receiving the surgery.

However, his fortunes took a turn for the better when he met Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda at a burial ceremony in Muko Sub County last year. Moved by his plight, Kikafunda pledged to assist him in any way she could.

True to her word, Kikafunda connected Tumukwasibwe with a medical health surgical camp organized by Mission to Heal, which she had lobbied to bring to the community. The camp, held at Muko Health Center IV, provided free surgical operations to over 60 people, including Tumukwasibwe, who successfully underwent the hernia surgery that had long eluded him.

Byaruhanga Muhammed, the African Coordinator of Mission to Heal, praised Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda for her unwavering dedication to helping those in need, regardless of their religion, tribe, or social status. He highlighted her role in ensuring that the people of Rubanda had access to vital medical services.

Kikafunda expressed her joy at being able to help Tumukwasibwe and others in the community. She reaffirmed her commitment to continuing her advocacy for the people of Rubanda, with a focus on improving healthcare and promoting sustainable development.
