Ghetto Youth in Kigezi Urge Government Inclusion in PDM Fund Distribution

Youth from the Kigezi Region have called on government officials to include them in the distribution of Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, emphasizing that access to these funds could help them establish their own businesses and reduce the temptation towards theft.

The appeal came during a meeting held today at the KIGEZI NRM Ghetto Community Based Organization’s headquarters, known as White House, located in the central division of Kabale District. The gathering aimed to discuss ways for the youth to engage with government programs and secure financial support.

Asiimwe Musa, the Ghetto President of the Kigezi Region, expressed frustration over the lack of financial assistance for their group, which boasts over 1,000 members. He noted that while ghetto groups in Kampala have benefitted from government funding, the Kigezi youth feel overlooked.

“The Kabale District does not value our contributions, despite our large numbers and organized groups,” Musa lamented. He highlighted the significant barrier posed by the requirement for a National ID, which many members do not possess, hindering their access to essential government programs.

Musa further shared that although some ghetto youths received training at the Hub Kitumba industrial center, they are struggling to find startup capital. Many have returned to the streets after completing their training due to a lack of financial support.

In a collective appeal, the youth urged the government to consider them for future support, specifically seeking startup capital for those who have acquired skills at the Hub. They believe such assistance is vital for their personal development and integration into the economy.
