Rt. Hon. Flavia Nyinakiza Kanagizi, the Kabale District Speaker, has urged parents to take greater responsibility in guiding their children’s consumption of television programs, online content, and food, warning of the long-term negative impacts these can have on their development.
Speaking as the chief guest at the end-of-cycle awarding ceremony for 67 top-class pupils at Kabale Quality Primary School in Kabale Municipality, Hon. Kanagizi highlighted growing parental neglect due to busy schedules as a significant factor contributing to moral decay and health risks among children.
She expressed concern about the unsupervised exposure of children to inappropriate content on television and the internet, emphasizing the need for parents to implement parental controls and set clear boundaries for media consumption.
“Parents need to spend quality time with their children and create an environment where open communication is encouraged. This is essential in instilling proper values and shielding them from harmful influences,” Kanagizi remarked.

In addition to concerns over media, Hon. Kanagizi decried the increasing trend of parents feeding their children unhealthy “junk food,” attributing it to busy lifestyles and complacency. She pointed out the rising health risks associated with poor diets and urged parents to prioritize natural and nutritious meals.
“It’s the parents’ responsibility to ensure their children consume foods that contribute to their growth and well-being, not just what is convenient or what the child demands,” she added.
