Kanungu District police are holding Twinomuhwezi Phillip on allegations of stealing coffee beans belonging to Onesmus Asiimwe, a resident of Ntabagwe Cell, Kihembe Parish, Kanyantorogo Sub-county.
The incident was reported by Asiimwe, the garden owner, at Kanungu Police Station. According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, the theft occurred on the night of November 18, 2024, when an unknown individual entered Asiimwe’s coffee garden and stole beans.
Upon receiving the report, police promptly secured the scene and utilized a sniffer dog to track the suspect. The dog followed a scent trail for approximately 300 meters, leading officers to Twinomuhwezi Phillip’s house. Inside, police discovered spilled coffee beans, which were suspected to be part of the stolen crop.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to selling the stolen coffee to a resident identified as Promise, who lives in the same village. The stolen beans have since been recovered and presented as evidence.
ASP Maate confirmed that Twinomuhwezi Phillip is being detained at Kanungu Central Police Station as investigations continue. He emphasized that preserving the crime scene played a crucial role in solving the case.
This incident highlights the importance of swift police action and community cooperation in addressing theft cases within the region.
