Kisoro Independent Candidate Akifeza Condemns Religious Divisions, Calls for Fair Competition in Woman MP By-election

Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, the independent candidate for the Kisoro District Woman MP seat, has taken a strong stand against sectarianism, advocating for unity and transparency in her campaign for the upcoming by-election. The campaigns, which began on November 4, will continue until November 12, with voting scheduled for November 14.

Akifeza launched her campaign in Nkuringo and Rubuguri Town Councils on Monday, proceeding to Nyanamo and Bukimbiri Town Councils yesterday Tuesday, and is scheduled to cover Nyundo and Kirundo Sub-Counties today. Her message stresses the importance of cohesion, urging voters to reject divisive politics rooted in religious or identity-based affiliations.

“Unity is what will move Kisoro forward,” Akifeza declared, emphasizing that unity should transcend religious or sectarian divides. “These religious affiliations shouldn’t divide Kisoro. We are one people, and we should remain united,” she added, calling on the community to prioritize collective progress over differences.

Akifeza also underscored the need for a fair and transparent electoral process. She urged authorities to ensure a “leveled ground” for all candidates, advocating for a campaign free from political, security, or religious interference. Referring to alleged irregularities in the recent NRM primaries, she urged voters to remain vigilant and actively safeguard the integrity of the election process.

Her stance resonates with many Kisoro residents who, disillusioned by past incidents of electoral bias, are keen on ensuring a fair process. Akifeza’s supporters remain optimistic, hoping her appeal for transparency will allow voters’ true choice to prevail.

Akifeza faces competition from several contenders: Rose Kabagyeni (NRM), Musanase Juliet (FDC, Najjanankumbi faction), Aisha Chimpaye (PPP), Sultana Salim Tana (NUP), and Meble Ingabire (UPC). This by-election follows the passing of the former Kisoro Woman MP and State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who died on September 7, 2024.

With a message of unity and integrity, Akifeza’s campaign continues to gain momentum across Kisoro as she calls on residents to make their voices heard in the election.
