Lake Bunyonyi Eco-Marathon Expected to Attract Over 500 Participants

The Lake Bunyonyi Eco-Marathon, scheduled to take place on 26th October 2024 in Kabale District, is expected to draw over 500 participants, according to the event organizers. The marathon, organized by the Centre for Peace and Conflict Mitigation (CEPCOM) Uganda in partnership with the Kigezi Corporate League, aims to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote healthier lifestyles.

Mark Tukamushaba, founder of the Kigezi Corporate League, announced that Miss Uganda, Natasha Nyonyozi, will serve as the event’s chief runner. Tukamushaba also confirmed that the 10-kilometre race will start and finish at Kabale Main Stadium, with over 100 companies, institutions, and organizations already confirming their participation.

Tukamushaba revealed the prize structure, with the winner set to receive UGX 1 million, while the second and third runners-up will take home UGX 300,000 and UGX 200,000, respectively.

“The event will bring together athletes and companies to raise awareness on the environmental issues affecting the Lake Bunyonyi catchment area, while also promoting corporate social responsibility,” Tukamushaba said.

Stephen Kuteesa, Executive Director of CEPCOM Uganda, emphasized the environmental importance of the Lake Bunyonyi region. He expressed concern over the degradation caused by human activities, including domestic solid waste pollution, indiscriminate littering, and burning, which have led to siltation, contamination of streams, and air pollution.

“This marathon will spotlight the urgent need for environmental preservation in the Lake Bunyonyi area, a region long known for its rich biodiversity,” Kuteesa said.

Kabale Municipality’s Environment Officer, Alfred Ahimbisiibwe, and Deputy Town Clerk, Eric Sunday, praised the initiative, noting that it not only highlights environmental challenges but also encourages participants to adopt healthy lifestyles by reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases.

The event will be held under the theme, “Preserving Biodiversity, Protecting the Prestigious Kigezi Region for Sustainable Coexistence.” It marks the first-ever eco-marathon in the region, aiming to bring together communities to safeguard the environment while promoting physical well-being.
