Live to Inspire CEO Kikafunda Raises Concerns Over Rising Mental Health Issues Among Youth Due to Drug and Alcohol Abuse

The CEO of Live to Inspire Uganda Chapter and International Community of BanyaKigezi (ICOB) board member, Hon. Evelyn Ninsiima Kikafunda, has expressed deep concern over the increasing mental health challenges attributed to drug and alcohol abuse among youth in Uganda.

Hon. Kikafunda made these remarks at St. Mary’s College Rushoroza School, located in Rushoroza Cell, Southern Division, Kabale Municipality, during the 2024 Kabale Diocesan Youth and Children Conference.

Addressing the attendees, Hon. Kikafunda said that it was paramount to talk to the youth and remind them that the use of drugs and other substances may cause irreversible effects on their lives, such as running mad. She attributes this to peer pressure, frustration, depletion, and the lack of mentors to direct them.

Kikafunda also urged the youth to live purpose-driven lives, rooted in clear visions, as a foundation for achieving their aspirations. She emphasized that embracing a life of focus and intentionality is key to steering clear of destructive behaviors.

Rev. Fr. Januario Nomugisha, the Director of Youth and Children Ministry in Kabale Diocese, echoed these sentiments, voicing his concerns over the detrimental impact of drug and alcohol abuse on young people. He stressed the importance of divine intervention in overcoming these challenges, citing the biblical principle that “without vision, people perish.”

Speaking during the function, Ivan Nabisingura a Clinical Psychologist from Metanoia Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Kabale Municipality, urged the youth to abstain from drug abuse, describing it as a short-term escape that exacerbates long-term problems.

Nabisingura highlighted the dangers of locally manufactured alcoholic and energy drinks, explaining that while initial samples may meet Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) requirements, some manufacturers later add harmful and addictive substances, including Viagra, after securing licenses.

He further encouraged them to seek guidance and counseling, consult psychologists, and visit rehabilitation centers to overcome addiction, depending on the severity of their dependence.

The event, which has so far attracted over 400 youths and children, emphasizes the importance of purposeful living and visionary goals for a brighter future.

The conference continues to draw more participants, with the number expected to grow before its conclusion on Sunday. The event highlights the church’s commitment to addressing pressing issues affecting young people while inspiring them to live fulfilling and healthy lives.
