Leaders and various stakeholders in Kabale District have today urged media practitioners in the district to take the forefront in the fight for environmental conservation and protection ahead of the World Press Freedom Day Celebrations.
This call was made today during the Kabale Town Cleaning Drive, organized by the Kabale Media Fraternity. The drive commenced from Highland Business Center and proceeded to Kabale Garage Street Market, commonly known as Owino, then to Kabale Police Station, Kabale Central Market, and concluded with Kigongi. The Kabale Media Fraternity was joined in this initiative by various institutions, including the Uganda Police Force, Kabale University, Bishop Barham University College, Ministry of Water and Environment, among other well-wishers.
Based on this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, “A Press for the Planet, Journalism in the face of Environmental Crisis,” Sam Arinetwe, the Chairperson for Kabale Municipalities Central Division, called upon the media to take the lead in championing environmental conservation and protection.
He further emphasized the importance of leaders joining the Kabale Town Cleaning Drive, highlighting the media’s assistance to the municipality in maintaining the health and sanitation of the town.

“I had to participate in this to appreciate Kabale Media Fraternity for including town cleaning as one of their activities to commemorate World Press Freedom Day. It would be an embarrassment if media personnel came to clean the town and leaders were not there,” Arinetwe said.
Arinetwe also emphasized that rapid climatic change has significantly impacted the Earth’s weather, attributing this to environmental degradation and a lack of environmental conservation knowledge among the locals. He called upon the media to take the lead in environmental conservation efforts.

Job Namanya Apuli, the head of the organizing committee, stated that while the drive aimed at cleaning Kabale Town served as a means of mobilizing people to participate in the World Press Freedom Day Celebrations, the team also focused on maintaining a clean town to ensure that people reside in a healthy and eco-friendly environment. He highlighted some of the activities planned for the event, including tree planting to preserve the ecosystem.
“We have cleaned Kabale Municipality to ensure that our people reside in a clean, eco-friendly environment. We believe that when the public receives this message from us, the journalists, it will resonate deeply with them,” Namanya said.
