The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, officially launched an ICT hub at San Giovanni School, Makiro, Kanungu District, in a landmark initiative aimed at improving computer literacy and digital skills among learners and the community.
The ICT hub, funded by the American Tower Corporation (ATC), is part of a broader effort to empower residents of Kanungu District with essential technological skills. During the launch event, Dr. Baryomunsi drew on a biblical analogy, likening the establishment of the hub to David’s victory over Goliath. “God commanded David to use what he had to fight Goliath,” he remarked, underscoring his determination to restore San Giovanni School’s past glory.
Dr. Baryomunsi highlighted his strong working relationship with ATC, which has spearheaded several development initiatives in the district, including a digital mobile truck that promotes vocational training, sports, agriculture, and computer literacy under the ATC Digital Communities project.
In addition to the ICT hub, the Minister pledged to initiate the construction of the school’s long-delayed multidisciplinary hall and to lobby for an increase in the number of government-paid teachers. He encouraged students to remain disciplined and dedicated to their studies, reminding them of their role as future leaders.
The digital center, established with a budget of UGX 101 million, will continue to receive backing from the Ministry of ICT, with plans for additional resources, such as water tanks and modern latrines, to be provided. The Minister also promised compensation for the trainers managing the facility.
Sheila Mugisha, a representative from ATC, noted that San Giovanni’s ICT hub is one of 42 digital hubs the company has established across Uganda. Dorothy Kabagambe, the Executive Director of ATC Uganda, emphasized that the hub’s services, including internet access and training, would be free and open to all residents, regardless of their age, religion, or political affiliation.
Several headteachers expressed their appreciation for the government’s continued support, particularly in providing computers, textbooks, and other scholastic materials. Denis Tukamuhabwa, the headteacher of San Giovanni School, praised the initiative but also appealed for help in completing a stalled multi-complex building project estimated to cost UGX 5 billion.
In response, Dr. Baryomunsi assured the community that he would work with the government and other partners to secure funding and ensure the project’s completion.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Assistant RDC Emmy Magezi, Kanungu Mayor Godfrey Karabenda, and representatives from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), alongside parents and school staff.
This ICT hub launch marks a critical step in advancing technological skills in Kanungu, with the Minister reaffirming his commitment to extending digital training to all schools in the district.
