The Miss Tourism Kigezi Initiative today, 28th December 2024, hosted Handicap Day at Kabale Main Stadium with a series of activities aimed at spreading hope, love, and humanity among people living with disabilities PWD’s in the Kigezi region.
The event, themed “Uplifting Capability for the Disabled People in the Kigezi Region,” began with a town cleaning activity through Kabale town.
Participants included staff from Kabale Municipality Central Division, the Miss Tourism Kigezi Initiative team, Uganda Red Cross Kabale Branch, stakeholders from Kigezi Teens Magazine, and Kabale residents. United in purpose, volunteers worked tirelessly to clean the town, promote environmental conservation, and raise awareness about the dangers of polythene (kavera) waste.
Faith Ainembabazi, the cluster head for Miss and Mr. Tourism Kigezi Initiative, emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment in Kabale. She encouraged fostering a culture of responsibility among the community to ensure cleanliness. Ainembabazi noted that the cleanup symbolizes a fresh start and reflects their commitment to a greener, healthier Kabale as a tourism town, capable of attracting long-term visitors.
After the cleaning activity, the team proceeded to Kabale Main Stadium, where about 100 people living with disabilities had gathered. A communal meal was shared with them as a symbol of unity and care.
Later in the day, essential items such as clothes, sanitary towels, and food supplies were distributed. This gesture aimed to bring smiles and provide practical support as the community transitions into the New Year. Ainembabazi explained that the initiative is a way of giving back to the community and fostering a sense of belonging for people living with disabilities, while also promoting hygiene among them.
Ainembabazi revealed plans to train people living with disabilities in Kabale in skills such as craft-making. She announced that the initiative would establish a crafts shop where tourists and other visitors could purchase items, providing income for these individuals. She further stated that this event would become an annual tradition, with this year marking its launch.
“We believe everyone has unique capabilities, and it is our duty as a society to create opportunities and uplift those who face challenges. Today’s activities reflect our commitment to building a more compassionate and equitable community,” she said.
John Karisa and Anna Kikamweba, both living with disabilities in Kabale, praised the initiative as a significant step toward promoting inclusion and addressing the needs of vulnerable groups in the Kigezi region.
Kate Tusingwire, the Councilor for People Living with Disabilities in Kabale Municipality’s Central Division, expressed her appreciation for the initiative. She noted that few people take the time to consider giving back to persons with disabilities and commended the Miss Tourism Kigezi Initiative for sharing a meal and providing essential items.
While officiating at the function, Sam Evidence Orikunda, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Sheema District, encouraged people with disabilities to utilize the government programs designed for their economic empowerment. Orikunda also applauded the initiative for giving back to the community and urged people to share their resources with special groups.
This impactful event not only emphasized the importance of environmental cleanliness and social inclusion but also reinforced the values of love and humanity as the cornerstone of New Year celebrations.
