MP Kamara Slams President Museveni’s Focus on Village Thieves Amid Massive Government Corruption

Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara, has reacted to President Museveni’s recent directive to the police not to grant bond to suspects accused of stealing property in villages.

Hon. Kamara addressed this issue on Friday, January 3, 2025, during the funeral service of the late Loyce Atwine, who succumbed to liver cancer. Atwine was the wife of former Kabale Municipality mayoral aspirant Richard Muhanguzi. The funeral service was held at All Saints Church, Kabale.

In his remarks, Kamara pointed out that the Bank of Uganda recently lost $17 million (approximately 60 billion shillings) to theft, yet the person responsible has not been arrested. Some of the stolen funds were traced to Japan and England but have not been recovered or returned to Uganda.

He criticized President Museveni’s directive, highlighting the double standards in handling theft cases. He argued that while village thieves are denied police bond, individuals involved in large-scale theft of public funds often go unpunished.

Kamara emphasized that such stolen funds should be directed towards the health sector to address critical issues, such as purchasing quality medication and ensuring health centers are well-equipped with non-expired drugs.

He made these comments in response to concerns raised by prominent Kabale businessman Peter Niwagaba, who highlighted the alarming rise of drug shops selling expired medications. Niwagaba revealed that some sellers remove expiration labels before selling the drugs to unsuspecting customers.
