Ndorwa County East MP Hopeful, Counsel Twenda, Urges Kigezi Student Leaders to Promote Responsible Social Media Use

Counsel Elvis Twenda, the Ndorwa County East MP hopeful, has called upon student leaders in the Kigezi Sub-region to take a proactive role in educating their peers about the proper use of social media. Twenda emphasized the need to steer students away from harmful online content, such as pornography, and to encourage responsible digital behavior.

He made these remarks while addressing the Kigezi Students Leadership Symposium 2024, held today at the National Teachers College (NTC) Kabale. The event saw the participation of student leaders from various institutions in the region, under the umbrella of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA).

The symposium, themed “The Role of Student Leaders in Steering National Development,” provided a platform for student leaders to discuss their roles in shaping the nation’s future. Counsel Twenda highlighted the significance of social media as a tool for growth but warned against its misuse, urging leaders to set a positive example for their peers.

“It is important that we use social media to spread knowledge, engage in meaningful debates, and uplift our communities. As future leaders, you must lead by example and guide fellow students on the dangers of misusing these platforms,” said Twenda.

The symposium also featured other speakers who addressed topics related to leadership, development, and the role of youth in national transformation. The student leaders in attendance committed to implementing the lessons learned from the event in their respective institutions.

In an interview, John Bosco Namara acknowledged that children, particularly students, often mishandle social media due to peer pressure. He urged students to avoid reckless online behavior and use social media positively to prevent future regret.

Namara also revealed that they had invited over 1,500 student leaders, with more than 1,000 attending.

The event concluded with a call for continued collaboration between student leaders and local leaders to ensure the region’s development and the responsible use of technology among youth. Notable figures in attendance included Grace Mugabirwe Mutebile, the Rubanda District Woman MP hopeful; Sam Alinaitwe; Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha; and Kabale District RDC Godfrey Nyakahuma, among many others.
