A football match between Nyanja and Kanjobe at Nyanja Playground in Maziba Sub County, Ndorwa East Constituency, Kabale District, has sparked political controversy, exposing the intensifying rivalry ahead of the parliamentary elections.
The event, organized by Counsel Elvis Twenda, aimed to unite the community but turned contentious when Dr. Protazio Begumisa, another parliamentary hopeful, attended the match and attempted to shift attention to himself.
Local leaders and residents were quick to criticize Dr. Begumisa’s actions, accusing him of undermining the efforts of other candidates. They urged him to focus on organizing his own events rather than hijacking activities spearheaded by others.
“Organize your event and leave others’ events alone,” said Gabriel Tumwesigye, a former LC2 chairman, emphasizing the need for candidates to maintain respect in the competitive political landscape.
Adding to the controversy, Dr. Begumisa reportedly handed out UGX 50,000 to some players and attendees, a move widely seen as an attempt to buy support. Prossy Ngabirano, LC3 Vice Chairperson, called the act “unacceptable and unbecoming of a candidate who seeks to represent the people.”
The event further showcased Counsel Elvis Twenda’s growing popularity among the locals, which poses a significant challenge to other candidates, particularly those from the ruling NRM party. Twenda used the occasion to solidify his independence, clarifying that his political ambitions were not influenced by Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba, the incumbent Ndorwa East MP.
“I came into this race on my own merit, not through the influence of Hon. Niwagaba,” Twenda stated, dispelling rumors of alignment with the current MP.
Dr. Begumisa, known for past controversies, previously challenged Hon. Niwagaba’s election victory in court, accusing him of bribery and falsification of results.
This incident highlights the heated political competition in Ndorwa East and the growing demand for integrity and respect among candidates vying for office.
