A total of UGX 1.245 billion has been raised towards the construction of the Diocese of Kigezi shopping mall, during the launch of the Bishop’s Development Fund (BDF) held today at St. Peter’s Cathedral Rugarama grounds in Kabale Municipality.
The President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was represented by Hon. David Bahati, the State Minister of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives in Charge of Industry, commended the church for its role in transforming communities both socially and economically. He acknowledged the strong partnership between the church and government in improving the lives of Ugandans.
President Museveni encouraged citizens to focus on wealth creation rather than relying solely on prayers for economic miracles. He emphasized that Ugandans should work to eradicate poverty by becoming wealth creators in their communities.
“We need to create wealth, not just sit and pray for miracles. Let’s actively work towards eradicating poverty in our communities,” Museveni’s message read.
In a sermon during the service, the Archbishop of the Anglican Province of Rwanda, Rt. Rev. Laurent Mbanda, urged Christians to lead committed and purposeful lives, showing gratitude for God’s blessings. He reminded believers of the importance of expressing their thankfulness through a renewed life that rejects the temptations of worldly standards.
“Christians should live committed lives, giving thanks to God for the testimonies in their lives and not conforming to the world’s standards,” Archbishop Mbanda said, contributing UGX 40 million towards the project.
Bishop Gaddie Akanjuna of the Diocese of Kigezi expressed his gratitude to President Museveni for supporting the church through Hon. David Bahati. He pledged continued cooperation between the government and the church, especially in advancing government programs like the Parish Development Model and diocesan initiatives such as the cultivation of Hass Avocado to boost household incomes.
The President contributed UGX 150 million in cash, bringing the total amount raised at the event to UGX 1.245 billion. The funds will support the construction of a shopping mall, which is expected to generate UGX 3 billion for the diocese within a year and a half, enhancing its financial stability.
