Parents Encouraged To Ditch Phones/Social Media For Quality Time With Their Children

Parents have been urged to prioritize quality time with their children, fostering strong relationships by listening and making consistent efforts to engage with them. This call to action was made by various speakers during the celebration of Tendo Children Centre’s 2nd annual Culture Day on Friday, July 26, 2024, at the school grounds in Nyabikoni, Kabale District.

The event brought together children from diverse backgrounds to share and celebrate their unique traditions, music, dance, and art. The atmosphere was lively and full of excitement as children, dressed in traditional attire, eagerly participated in showcasing their cultural heritage. Proudly sharing their customs, music, and dance, the event was a beautiful display of diversity and inclusivity, fostering a sense of togetherness and showcasing the richness of human culture.

Aimed at celebrating cultural heritage and promoting family values, the event saw parents, children, and community members coming together. Speakers emphasized the importance of parents putting aside their phones and other distractions to focus on meaningful interactions with their children.

Ruth Kendegye Ndyabahika, Director of Grace Villa Girls, spoke as a guest speaker, urging parents to give their children ample time, rather than being absorbed in phones and social media. “Building a strong bond with your children is essential for their emotional and social development,” said Ndyabahika. “Taking the time to listen to them, understand their needs, and be consistent in your interactions can have a profound impact on their well-being.”

Immaculate Agaba, Director of Tendo Children Centre, in her opening speech, highlighted the significance of understanding and appreciating different cultures, stressing how it fosters mutual respect and unity among the children. She encouraged parents to create a supportive and nurturing environment at home, where children feel valued and heard. Agaba emphasized the importance of parents being intentional about spending quality time with their children in today’s fast-paced world, away from the distractions of technology. She also urged the parents to support study tours for their children.

Kenneth Agaba, Executive Director of Tendo Children Centre, underscored the significant impact of the school’s Culture Day, stating that it serves as a vital platform for celebrating diversity, promoting cultural understanding, and nurturing a sense of unity among the children. He noted that through such events, children gain a deeper appreciation for their own cultural heritage while also learning to respect and embrace the unique traditions of their peers.

Parents expressed heartfelt appreciation for the school’s vital role in supporting them when they cannot be physically present. They acknowledged the school’s dedication to nurturing their children’s cultural awareness and fostering a sense of belonging. As the day came to an end, children left the event with hearts filled with joy, enriched by the experience of celebrating their cultural heritage.

The 2nd annual Culture Day at Tendo Children Centre served as a reminder of the essential role parents play in their children’s lives. By dedicating time and attention to their children, parents can build stronger, more resilient family bonds, ensuring a brighter future for the next generation.
