Parents Encouraged to Prioritize Their Children’s Education Over Schools Religious Differences

As a way of promoting and enhancing the talents of learners in alignment with the new educational curriculum, particularly in the area of Games and Sports, the students of St. Peter’s Vocational Senior Secondary School Kakarisa held their first-ever sports day today at Kakarisa Playground in Nangara Parish, Nyamweru Sub County, Rubanda District.

The day commenced with a thanksgiving mass at Kakarisa Catholic Center in Kakore Catholic Parish, marking the official welcome of Senior 1 students. The mass was presided over by Rev. Fr. Deusidedit Maniragaba, the Parish Priest. During his sermon, Rev. Fr. Maniragaba urged the students to embrace correction, prioritize prayer, and practice truthfulness while avoiding selfishness and jealousy towards their peers.

Following the mass, the school divided into two teams, A and B, competing in various games such as tug of war, racing events over different distances, and soccer. In a spirited contest, Group B emerged victorious with 40 points, narrowly edging out Group A, which scored 35 points.

Mr. Valence Akankwasa, the headmaster of St. Peter’s Vocational Senior Secondary School, expressed his delight at the successful event. “Today’s sports day is a testament to our commitment to nurturing the diverse talents of our students. Such events not only promote physical fitness but also instill values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance,” said Akankwasa.

Rev. Fr. Maniragaba also expressed his support for the school and its initiatives. “It’s inspiring to see the enthusiasm and dedication of the students. I am proud to support St. Peter’s and will always support it until it reaches a better position.” He also donated footballs to both the girls’ and boys’ teams to encourage their sporting spirit. Rev. Fr. Maniragaba also used the platform to ask Rubanda District to consider granting the school a center number, allowing them to conduct Uganda Certificate of Education exams on their premises.

The event was officiated by Kitabutuka Obed Mutatina, the Bubaare Town Council District Councilor and Rubanda District Secretary of Social Services. He commended the school for its efforts in promoting extracurricular activities. “Sports play a crucial role in the holistic development of students. I applaud St. Peter’s Vocational Senior Secondary School for organizing this event and hope to see many more in the future.”

Kitabutuka also pledged to follow up on the requested requirements that need action from the district, such as the center number and the consideration of the school as a government institution to improve its standards. He also cautioned parents against segregating their children’s education based on the church foundation schools or different affiliations, emphasizing that the priority should be their children’s education, not religion.

The successful sports day marks a significant milestone for St. Peter’s Vocational Senior Secondary School Kakarisa, highlighting the importance of integrating sports and education for the all-around development of students.
