Territorial police in Rukungiri are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 46-year-old man, who succumbed to injuries after allegedly being beaten for stealing a pig.
The incident occurred in Nyarushanje Sub County, Rukungiri District.
The deceased, identified as Nelson Arinaitwe, also known as Kidudu, was a resident of Rugoma Cell, Ruyonza Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County Rukungiri District
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, the incident began on the night of September 6, 2024, in Katungu Cell, Kahoko Parish, Nyakishenyi Sub County, when an unknown person reportedly stole a pig belonging to Mutesigensi Saini. Upon realizing that his pig had been stolen, Mutesigensi made an announcement on a local radio station in Rukungiri Municipality while continuing his search.
On September 26, 2024, around 3:00 p.m., the LC3 councillor for Ruyonza Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County, informed Mutesigensi that the stolen pig had been found in the possession of Nelson Arinaitwe. Mutesigensi rushed to Rugoma Cell, where he found the deceased tied up and severely beaten, lying next to the pig at Omukarere Trading Centre.
Arinaitwe was then taken to Rubabo Police Station, along with the pig as evidence. However, upon assessing Arinaitwe’s condition, the Officer in Charge of the station took him to God’s Care Centre Clinic, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Maate confirmed that the scene was visited and documented, statements were taken from relevant witnesses, and the body was transported to Rwakabengo Health Centre III Mortuary for a postmortem. Investigations are ongoing.
