Renowned Petroleum Expert Dozith Abeinomugisha Laid to Rest in Rubanda District

On Thursday, December 19, 2024, the late Dozith Abeinomugisha, a revered petroleum geoscientist and Director of Midstream at the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Mareju, Nyakabungo, Rubanda District. Abeinomugisha, 59, passed away on December 16, 2024, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Uganda’s oil and gas sector and a profound impact on education and leadership.

According to his wife, Jennifer Abeinomugisha, the late Dozith succumbed to complications from ulcers. She recounted how he began experiencing severe pain in September, leading to surgery in Turkey in November. Although the surgery seemed successful, his health took a sudden turn after returning to Uganda, where he passed away a week later.

Jennifer eulogized her husband as a hardworking, loving, and dedicated family man who prioritized the education of their four children. “He worked tirelessly to ensure we never lacked anything. Let us carry forward the unity and cooperation he instilled in us,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the children, Ainomugisha Mary Grace described their father as both principled and humorous, saying, “He was the most supportive parent we could ever ask for. We promise to uphold his legacy.”

Executive Director of PAU, Ernest Rubondo, reflected on Abeinomugisha’s remarkable career. Starting in 2000 with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, he transitioned from the private sector to become one of Uganda’s leading geoscientists. Rubondo highlighted Abeinomugisha’s role in confirming Uganda’s oil reserves and his groundbreaking achievements, such as overseeing the selection of Uganda’s crude oil pipeline route in 2016.

“Dozith was a visionary and a lifelong learner. At the time of his passing, he had just completed a Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Manchester, awaiting graduation,” Rubondo said.

Rev. Fr. Bruno Byomuhangi, during the burial service at Kabirizi Catholic Parish, celebrated Abeinomugisha as a devoted servant of God and an inspiration. “His life is a testament to using one’s God-given talents to serve both humanity and the divine,” the Reverend remarked.

From humble beginnings at Kabirizi Primary School to serving as head prefect and band captain at St. Paul’s Minor Seminary, Abeinomugisha excelled in academics and leadership. His journey led him to Makerere University for a degree in Geology, followed by a Master of Science in Petroleum Geoscience at the University of London.

Abeinomugisha taught mathematics and sciences at Bishop Comboni College and St. Paul’s Seminary before delving into petroleum geoscience. His career milestones included managing exploration licenses, leading geological mapping, and serving as Assistant Commissioner for Refining in the Midstream Petroleum Department.

Abeinomugisha was instrumental in shaping Uganda’s petroleum industry. As President of the Geological Society of Uganda (2005–2012), he amplified Uganda’s global presence in oil exploration and development. His incorruptible character and professionalism earned him respect on international platforms, where he showcased Uganda’s potential with scientific precision.

The funeral drew a large gathering, including Rubanda District leaders, SPOBA alumni, and petroleum industry professionals. Aspirant Rubanda Woman MP Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda was among the attendees, highlighting the profound impact Abeinomugisha had on his community and nation.

The late Dozith Abeinomugisha leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and transformative leadership. His contributions to Uganda’s oil and gas sector will continue to inspire future generations.
