Residents of Ndorwa East have been encouraged to focus on cultivating both cash and food crops to ensure food security for their families.
This message was delivered by Dr. Akampumuza James Rutanga, a senior lawyer also the hopeful Member of Parliament for Ndorwa East (2026-2031), during a fundraising event for the construction of a house for the Parish Priest at Kanjobe Church of Uganda during a Sunday service at Kanjobe Church parish Kamuronko Archdeaconry, Diocese of Kigezi.
Dr. Rutanga reminded the community that, in the past, residents were encouraged to plant trees, which generate income but take a long time to mature. While acknowledging that residents have become skilled at planting coffee and trees, which contribute to development, he highlighted the challenge that these crops require years to yield returns.
He emphasized the importance of planting faster-growing food crops such as bananas, matooke, and sweet potatoes, which can mature in a shorter time, ensuring a quicker source of food and income.
“Bananas take just three months to mature and can be used as food or sold for income to pay school fees or for other useful things,” Dr. Rutanga said. “In one year, a banana plantation can provide multiple harvests, unlike coffee and trees. I urge you to consider planting bananas as a quick source of both food and income.”

Dr. Rutanga further urged the public to balance tree planting with food crop cultivation, advising them to plan for their families’ future rather than focusing only on immediate needs.

Additionally, Dr. Rutanga addressed recent misinformation, refuting claims that he had called residents of Ndorwa East to certain locations to receive money ahead of the elections. He dismissed these rumours as fake news spread by individuals attempting to tarnish his reputation and urged people to ignore such false information.

During the service, Dr. Rutanga contributed over UGX 1,200,000 towards the construction of the Parish Priest’s house at Kanjobe Church of Uganda.
Rev. Alex Manayire, the Parish Priest of Kanjobe Church, encouraged the congregation to always plan for their future endeavours. He noted that, much like the national government prepares a budget to ensure financial stability, individuals should plan to secure their financial well-being.
Dr. Rutanga also attended a thanksgiving service for men at St. Peter’s Birambo Church of Uganda in Kamuronko Archdeaconry, where funds were being raised for the completion of the church. He contributed over UGX 1.5 million to support the cause.
