Ryakarimira Town Council in Ndorwa County West of Kabale District is grappling with a severe water shortage, despite its proximity to Lake Bunyonyi. This crisis was highlighted today Wednesday, July 3, 2024, during a piggery project distribution event for locals from Kacerere Ward, Hamuhambo Ward, and Musamba Parish in Rubaya Sub County by Hon. Atwakiire Catherine Ndamira, the Kabale District Woman MP.
Local leaders, including Basheija Edmand, Chairperson of Hamuhambo Local Council, and Twebaze Andrew, Chairperson of Kigarama Cell, voiced their concerns about the irregular piped water supply, which is only available for atleast twice a month.
“Residents are forced to trek long distances to wells down the hills, where a jerrican of water costs 1000 shillings,” they said. The situation was exacerbated by heavy downpours in April, which damaged wells and destroyed crops.
The water crisis has also impacted students’ education, as they must fetch water for domestic use before attending classes. “The burden on our young learners is immense and unfair,” Edmand commented.

Mbabazi Peace Muntu, Deputy Mayor of Ryakarimira Town Council, described the situation as unfortunate given the town’s proximity to Lake Bunyonyi. “Many residents cannot afford the 1000 shillings for a jerrican of water, posing a significant threat to the elderly and vulnerable members of our community,” she noted.

She emphasized the necessity of an adequate water supply for the piggery project to succeed and urged for immediate action to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
