Rubanda District Woman MP Hopeful Kikafunda Rallies Against Addiction in Youth

Rubanda District Woman MP hopeful and President of Green Environment Promotion (GEP), Hon. Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda, has called for a collective effort to address mental health issues and combat the rising tide of addiction among youth.

Speaking at Metanoia Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Kijuguta, Kabale District, today, Kikafunda highlighted the dangers posed by alcohol, drug abuse, and substance addiction, which have become a growing concern in the region.

The event, organized as part of Christmas and end-of-year celebrations, began with a Mass led by Rev. Fr. Alexander Ahumuza of Christ the King Church Kabale. The Mass, attended by Christians and the Kijuguta Hiika Choir, included Holy Communion and prayers for healing and resilience among patients at the center.

Hon. Kikafunda, who is also the CEO of the “Live to Inspire” Uganda Chapter, delivered an inspirational talk to individuals undergoing rehabilitation. She encouraged them to celebrate small victories on their journey to recovery and urged resilience in rebuilding their lives.

“Addiction should not define your future. Every step forward is a victory worth celebrating. Stay strong and remain committed to your recovery journey,” she said.

Kikafunda commended the transformative work being done by the Metanoia Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, the only private facility of its kind in the Kigezi Region since its establishment in 2023. She called on families, communities, and leaders to unite in combating addiction and its associated vices, including domestic and sexual violence.

With the festive season in full swing, she also warned against excessive alcohol consumption, emphasizing its long-term effects and the disproportionate impact on youth.

Rev. Fr. Ahumuza praised the center’s efforts in transforming lives and reiterated the importance of faith and community support.

“Addiction is not the end of the road. Every small step forward is a victory. True healing begins with prayer, discipline, and a commitment to change. Lean on God’s strength and the support of those around you,” he advised.

Ivan Nabisingura, a clinical psychologist and Director of Metanoia Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, explained that the event aimed to provide spiritual comfort and healing while celebrating Christmas with patients. He noted that the center employs various approaches to aid recovery, including spiritual guidance.

“Our focus is holistic recovery. We invited the Church to lead in prayer and reflection, ensuring that the spiritual needs of our patients are also addressed,” Nabisingura said.

Since its inception, the Metanoia Centre has treated numerous individuals battling addiction, offering professional counseling, therapy, and medical support. The facility has become a beacon of hope for the Kigezi Region, filling a critical gap in mental health and addiction recovery services.
