The Women’s Day celebration at Nyakihanga playground in Kashekye Parish, Kamwezi sub-county, was marked by both celebration and pleas for urgent government intervention on pressing infrastructure issues. Under the theme “INVEST IN WOMEN: ACCELERATE PROGRESS,” the event highlighted the district’s ongoing struggles with poor road conditions and power outages.
During the event, Teddyson Niwagaba, the Kamwezi sub-county LC3 chairman, raised alarms about the deplorable state of the roads in the area. He emphasized the critical need for electricity in Kashekye Parish, which, despite its large population and health facilities, still lacks reliable power.
“It’s unfortunate that a parish with such a significant population and essential health facilities remains without electricity,” said Niwagaba. He took the opportunity to praise the achievements of the Rukiga District Women MP in the sub-county, underscoring the need for continued development efforts.

Joselin Arineitwe, chairperson of the Rukiga Women’s Council, commended the government for its various empowerment programs for women, such as the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP), Emyooga, and the Parish Development Model (PDM). However, she urged women to use these programs to uplift their families rather than undermine their husbands.

The celebration was a blend of joy and advocacy, reflecting the resilience and determination of the Rukiga District locals to see tangible improvements in their community infrastructure.
Although Rukiga District celebrated International Women’s Day yesterday, June 8, 2024, the day is annually celebrated worldwide on March 8. It is a global day recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
