Sheikh Kassim Calls for Inclusivity and Community Engagement at IGP Tournament

Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (D/RDC) of Wakiso District, has called on the people of Kigezi to warmly welcome the Inspector General of Police (IGP) tournament, which resumed today.

Speaking on Saturday December, 14 2024 at Kabale Main Stadium in Kabale Municipality, where he officiated the launch of the IGP Tournament for the Kigezi region as the Guest of Honor, Sheikh Kassim emphasized the need to foster a positive relationship between the community and the Uganda Police Force.

After playing the Kigezi region the winning team will be taken for national games.

Kassim, who is also a hopeful Member of Parliament for Kabale Municipality in the 2026-2031 term, acknowledged that at times, a gap has existed between the police and the public. He urged the people of Kigezi to see the Uganda Police as friends, pointing out that many police officers in uniform are their own children, husbands, mothers, and family friends.

“I encourage the community to support the IGP Tournament and use this opportunity to interact with police officers,” Sheikh Kassim said. “Through such engagements, you will realize there is no need to fear police officers. Events like these bring us together as civilians and law enforcement, enabling us to build stronger bonds.”

He further urged the community to take advantage of this tournament to establish a positive working relationship with the police.

Sheikh Kassim also advised the Uganda Police Force to use this platform to promote community policing, ensuring improved security and protection of Ugandans’ lives and property.

Sheikh Kassim extended his gratitude to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for organizing the sports tournament and to the leadership of Kigezi for giving him the honor of launching the event. He described the opportunity as a sign of trust and promised to work towards maintaining the good relationship between the community and the police.

He pledged his support to the winning team at the conclusion of the tournament and assured the players of his continued involvement. “I would also encourage police officers in uniform to participate in a friendly match. This way, we can all return to our places of work safely, without injuries, but with renewed friendships,” he added.

In his closing remarks as Guest of Honor, Sheikh Kassim called on the public to embrace community policing and urged the police leadership, including the Regional Police Commander (RPC), to involve female police officers in the tournament to promote inclusivity.
