Sports stakeholders in Kabale District have raised concerns over the lack of improved sports infrastructure, which they say has hindered sports development in the region. This issue came to light during a friendly football match between Karubanda Legends FC and staff of K-Town FM, organized by the Deputy RCC of Nakawa and Kabale native, Sheikh Kasimu Kamugisha.
The match, held at St. Paul’s Seminary playground in Kabale Municipality, saw Karubanda Legends FC claim victory with a 3-1 scoreline. However, the focus of the event extended beyond the game, highlighting the dire state of sports infrastructure in the district.
Sheikh Kasimu Kamugisha emphasized the urgent need for stakeholders to invest in modern sports facilities. He lamented that Kabale and the Kigezi sub-region lack a single improved sports facility capable of hosting local or national-level events.
“Investment in sports infrastructure is essential for nurturing talent and promoting physical fitness,” Kamugisha remarked. He also urged the youth to embrace sports, citing its potential to generate income and foster discipline.
Brian Akakwasa, CEO of Kigezi Homeboys, expressed disappointment over the neglected state of sports facilities in Kabale. He criticized both the government and local authorities for failing to prioritize infrastructure development, stating, “This neglect has stifled the growth of sports in our region.” Akakwasa called for immediate intervention from all stakeholders to address the issue.
Hirally Tumukunde, the team captain of Karubanda Legends FC, attributed the decline of legendary teams in the region to a lack of funding from both the local community and the government. “The absence of adequate support has left many teams struggling to survive,” Tumukunde noted.
Kabale District Deputy Speaker Ian Mugisha urged the community to take the lead in improving sports infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of grassroots support for local talent, stating, “Once the community unites in supporting sports, the government will have a stronger basis to intervene and provide additional support.”
The state of sports infrastructure in Kabale has been a persistent issue. The Kabale Municipal Stadium, for instance, is often rendered unusable during the rainy season, underscoring the need for urgent upgrades.
As the call for action grows louder, stakeholders hope that renewed focus on sports infrastructure will breathe new life into the region’s sports activities and pave the way for future achievements.
