Police have commenced investigations into a house belonging to Jason Ntaconzaba, which was allegedly set ablaze by unidentified individuals in Kisoro district. Ntaconzaba, a teacher by profession, owned the house.
According to eyewitnesses, they rushed to extinguish the fire upon seeing flames and smoke emanating from the house around 10:30 am. They found the door open and managed to remove a cupboard and a few items from the sitting room due to the intensity of the fire.
Ndabarinze Christopher, the LC2 chairperson of Kamonyi Ward, stated that Moses Muhingira informed him about his brother’s house being on fire. Christopher promptly informed the OC Fire Brigade at Kisoro Police, who responded to extinguish the fire.
Ntaconzaba Jason, the owner of the house, stated that he was informed about the incident while at Kabindi Secondary School. He mentioned that he had locked the house in the morning but was shocked to find a padlock with keys abandoned near the front door. He called for assistance for his family as everything was destroyed by the fire.
Ntaconzaba suspects that someone opened the door, stole from the house, and later set it on fire. He lamented, “In the morning, when I was going to work, I left after locking my house. I have lost all my belongings, including my academic documents.”
The fire extensively damaged the interior, iron sheets, and glass of the house.
Iyamuremye Gerald, the Northern Division Speaker, condemned the act, attributing it to idle individuals.
Friday Deogracious, leading the OC Fire Brigade and Rescue Services from Kisoro Police, stated that the fire is suspected to have been maliciously set by unknown individuals as the house had no electricity.
“At around 10:30 am, I received a call from concerned citizens regarding a fire outbreak in one of the houses. I immediately mobilized my staff, and we swiftly took action, discovering damage to properties. Since the house lacked electricity, I suspect someone opened a window and initiated the fire,” Friday stated.
