The family of the late Meresi Kataryeba gathered with Christians at St. Mudesita Catholic Church in Kekubo, Kabale Municipality, on January 1, 2025, to honor her legacy and further her charitable work. Kateryeba, who passed away on November 27, 2024, was known for her unwavering dedication to the church and her community.
During the commemorative service, Katayeba’s children, led by Sophia Kyarimpa—an aspiring Rubanda District Woman MP candidate for 2026—committed to continuing their mother’s tradition of hosting an annual Thanksgiving ceremony to support the construction of the church. This year’s event raised over UGX 1 million for the project.
“My mother dreamed of leaving a lasting legacy within the church, but her journey was cut short,” Kyarimpa said. “We are determined to see her vision come to fruition, and we will hold this Thanksgiving event annually until St. Mudesita Catholic Church is complete.”
The event also saw the baptism of Kataryeba’s daughter-in-law and grandchildren, fulfilling a promise Kataryeba had made before her passing.
In her address, Kyarimpa urged the community to work hard in 2025 to achieve their personal and communal goals. She emphasized the value of education, encouraging parents to prioritize their children’s schooling as a cornerstone for a brighter future. Additionally, she called on locals to embrace government initiatives targeting poverty eradication.
Rev. Fr. Prosper Turyahabwe, a formator at St. Charles Lwanga Seminary Nyakibale in Rukungiri District, presided over the mass. He inspired the congregation to make 2025 a year of success and personal transformation, cautioning against indulgence in destructive behaviors such as excessive drinking and infidelity.
“Let us use this year to strengthen our faith and focus on building our spiritual and earthly lives,” Fr. Turyahabwe urged.
The heartfelt commemoration reflected the late Kateryeba’s enduring influence and served as a reminder of the power of faith and community to preserve legacies.
