The territorial police in Kanungu have arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the murder of a 64-year-old woman whose body was discovered on Friday lying in her bed.

The suspects have been identified as Muhumuza Boaz, 54, of Rwamuhima Cell, Kyamakanda Parish, Buyanja Sub- County, Rukungiri District; Ndindwamukama Nelson, 24, a cook at Rovens Hotel in Kihihi Town Council, and a resident of Kyandago Cell, Rutendero Parish, Kayonza Sub- County, Kanungu District; and Matsiko Justus, 34, a bodaboda rider of Rwenyerere B Cell, Bihomborwa Ward, Kihihi Town Council, Kanungu District.

They are all alleged to have killed Scovia Nyiramahoro, a resident of Rukarara Cell, Rwanga Ward, Kihihi Town Council, Kanungu District.

It is alleged that on Thursday, the deceased, who was staying with her grandson Ahumuza Chrispus, 13, went to bed after supper. On Friday morning, the grandson woke up at 6:00 AM, checked her room, and couldn’t find her. He then proceeded to school, leaving the house open.

Their immediate neighbour, Alex, came by that same morning looking for the deceased, who had promised to give him 40,000 shillings for fresh coffee. He found nobody at home, called out but received no response, and then moved to the back of the house where he found the windows broken, the door open, and the house in disarray. He informed the area chairman, who came to see the house, and then called the deceased’s son, Karenzi Denis, who reported the incident to the police.

Kigezi Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, saying that officers visited the scene and documented it. They observed significant injuries on the deceased’s head. A postmortem was conducted at Kihihi Health Centre IV.

Maate added that the body was taken for burial as inquiries continue. The matter has been registered at Kanungu Central Police Station under CRB 290/2024.
