Two suspects, including a Congolese national, have been accused of stealing coffee from the plantation of Tugabirwe Bernard, the chairperson of Nkwenda Cell, Southern Ward, in Kanungu District.
According to a police statement, the suspects, identified as Gwido Akeija and Congerie, a Congolese national, allegedly stole coffee from Tugabirwe’s garden. The theft was reported on December 31, 2024, by Tugabirwe, who discovered that unknown individuals had raided his plantation.
Upon receiving the report, officers from Bwindi Police Post, including a Canine Unit and CID team, visited the scene, which had been preserved for investigation.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, explained that the police dog tracked the suspects for about 1.2 kilometers and led officers to Gwido Akeija’s home, where the dog stopped at his doorway.
Gwido Akeija was subsequently arrested and taken to Bwindi Police Post, where he reportedly admitted to the theft and implicated Congerie, who works at the home of Penina Benoni.
Both suspects were later transferred to Butogota Police Station for further investigation. Maate stated that inquiries into the matter are ongoing
