Military officials from Uganda and Rwanda are currently engaged in a three-day meeting aimed at fortifying border security and combating transnational crime. The discussions, held in Mbarara City, are focused on enhancing collaboration between the armed forces of both nations and devising effective strategies to address security concerns along their shared border.
A delegation from the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF), led by Brig. Gen. Nelson Rwigema, the RDF Second Division Commander, was warmly received today at the Katuna Border by Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops led by Brig. Gen. Paul Muhanguzi, the Ugandan Second Infantry Division Commander.
Before proceeding to Mbarara City, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Kabale District Headquarters, where they held a brief closed-door meeting with district leaders, including Kabale Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Nyakahuma and District Chairperson Nelson Nshangabasheija, among others.
Following the meeting, Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, the UPDF Second Infantry Division Public Information Officer, addressed the media, outlining the agenda for the three-day security conference in Mbarara.
He emphasized that the primary objective of the meeting is to foster cooperation between the two nations’ armed forces to ensure the prosperity and security of cross-border communities and the region at large.
“It’s about prosperity for cross-border communities and the regional prosperity of our nations,” Maj. Kiconco Tabaro stated.
He further expressed optimism regarding the outcomes of previous discussions, predicting positive impacts on legal cross-border trade and the resolution of issues affecting border communities.
“The good relations between the two nations are exemplified by increased interaction between the people of Uganda and Rwanda through communication and trade, among other areas,” he added.
Maj. Kiconco also noted that the engagement at Les Vegas Gardens Hotel in Mbarara City would include participation from Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Shilling, the Uganda Defence Advisor to Rwanda, Col. Emmanuel Luzindana, the Rwanda Defence Advisor to Uganda, as well as intelligence officers and unit commanders at both operational and tactical levels.
Following their engagement in Kabale, the team proceeded to Mbarara City to continue the discussions aimed at fortifying security and fostering regional cooperation.
