Unique Sports Academy Secures Seventh Victory in Kigezi Women Football Tournament

Unique Sports Academy has emerged as champions of the 2024 Kigezi Women Football Tournament, marking their seventh win in the tournament’s history. The competition, which celebrated its 10th edition, was held at the Kabale Municipal Stadium and attracted over 34 women’s teams from the Kigezi and Ankole sub-regions. The event was organized under the visionary leadership of Diana Nkamusiima.

Unique Sports Academy clinched victory after a tense final match against Young Talent Sports Academy. Following a goalless draw in regulation time, Unique Sports triumphed in the penalty shootout with a 3-1 scoreline.

Vianny Turyakira, head coach of Unique Sports Academy, attributed their success to hard work and determination. He praised the tournament for nurturing football talent and providing scholarships to young girls, emphasizing the importance of its continuity.

“This tournament has strengthened our team’s goals in football and provided opportunities for many girls to secure scholarships. I hope it continues to grow each year,” Turyakira remarked.

Team captain Daphine Tukamushaba expressed joy at their victory, crediting the team’s commitment and unity for their success. She also shared her aspirations to play football internationally, inspired by the opportunities the tournament has provided.

“Through this platform, I see myself achieving my dream of becoming an international football player,” said Tukamushaba.

Diana Nkamusiima, CEO of the Kigezi Women Tournament, highlighted the tournament’s role in showcasing girls’ football talents. She noted its success in shaping players who have gone on to represent national teams and gain academic scholarships.

“This tournament has enabled girls to develop their football talents and pursue education through scholarships. It’s a platform that truly transforms lives,” Nkamusiima explained.

When asked about the absence of boys in the tournament, Nkamusiima attributed it to limited funding but expressed hope that boys could be included in future editions if resources allow.

The guest of honor, Ruth Ndyabahika, founder of Grace Villa, commended the tournament for its impact on girls’ lives. She acknowledged that such platforms have helped young players qualify for national teams, including the She Cranes.

“Tournaments like this have created pathways for young girls to shine at the national level. They are crucial for developing talent and empowering the girl child,” said Ndyabahika.

This year’s event also featured an under-12 category, where Obumwe Sports Academy emerged victorious, defeating Young Talent Academy U12 in the final with a 2-0 scoreline.

The Kigezi Women Tournament remains an annual event that continues to uplift women in football and provide opportunities for growth and development.
